The Mahakal Mandir is a unique sacred space of Hindu-Buddhist co-existence. Walking by the colorful array of Buddhist prayer flags, one may hear the sounds of Hindu bells and chants. Where the Shiva linga are housed with reverence, Buddhist statues accompany.
Situated on the highest ridge above the town of Darjeeling, this site was once a Buddhist monastery called “Dorje-Ling”, meaning Land of the Thunderbolt, from which the name of the town Darjeeling came.
This shared sacred site is one of significance and practice to both Hinduism and Buddhism, and a symbol of how religions can live together in peace.
