This is a high quality fine art print of the original art piece entitled "Uplifted".  The print captures the original painting by Samina Hooda, created for the Who Are our Neighbors? National Endowment of the Arts funded "Our Town" grant exhibit.

Uplifted is a visual tribute to Velma Mitchell—a woman whose life radiates love, resilience, and the power of bridge-building across deep divides.  This piece honors her legacy of service, compassion, and transformative community leadership in South Dallas.  Meeting Velma is a profound experience.  She holds the heartbreaking history of losing her 14-year-old son—a tragedy that became the turning point of her life.  With the support of a mentor and longtime friend, Mike Fechner, she chose to rebuild her world by uplifting others, especially families in the Bonton neighborhood.

At the heart of the painting is a hand-drawn portrait of Velma. Her eyes reflect both sorrow and hope, the depth of someone who has turned pain into purpose.  Behind her, the background is divided:  soft blues and pearlescent whites represent the affluence of North Dallas; earthy browns, golds, and coppers evoke the vibrant yet underserved South.

This gorgeous and inspirational piece is reproduced here as a high quality fine art print on matte paper, and with a 1" white border all around.  Frame not included.
